Strengthening Public Safety in Our Community

Commissioner McCarty takes public safety seriously and has been proactive in ensuring our neighborhood remains secure. His dedication to enhancing public safety has driven numerous initiatives aimed at creating a safer environment for all residents.

Collaborating with MPD

Steven has partnered with the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) on multiple events, including the Blagden Alley Community Day in 2023 and other initiatives with the Kennedy Rec Center. These events foster community engagement and promote safety awareness.

Steven has also worked closely with MPD to address concerns of loitering and drug dealing in our alleys, ensuring these areas are on the radar for their crime suppression units. He has been a vital link between residents and MPD officers, quickly addressing questions and concerns, and facilitating residents' and building managers' understanding of MPD programs like the DC Camera Rebate Program and the Camera Connect Program. By connecting MPD directly with building managers, Steven ensures they understand these programs and how to participate effectively.

Public Safety Beyond Policing

Steven supports a holistic approach to public safety that goes beyond traditional policing. He has advocated for funding the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (ONSE) to continue providing vital violence prevention services in our neighborhood. By supporting community-based violence prevention programs, mental health crisis intervention teams, and other non-police approaches to safety, Steven aims to address public safety issues comprehensively.Steven has partnered with condominium buildings, such as the Whitman Condominium, to better understand their incident response plans and to ensure he can advocate effectively with MPD and public safety agencies when issues arise. This collaboration enhances the overall preparedness and safety of the community.

Advocating for Victim Services

Understanding the importance of victim services, Steven launched into action when he learned that VPART (Violence Response and Prevention Team) funding was going to be cut from the 2025 DC fiscal budget. He advocated with other Councilmembers, including Councilmember Pinto, to reincorporate VPART funding into the budget, demonstrating his commitment to supporting victims of crime.

Through his dedicated efforts, Commissioner McCarty has shown a steadfast commitment to strengthening public safety, ensuring that our community remains a safe and welcoming place for all residents. His proactive approach and strong partnerships with public safety agencies continue to make a positive impact on our neighborhood.
