Street and Traffic Safety
Ensuring street and traffic safety for everyone who uses our sidewalks and roadways is one of Commissioner McCarty's top priorities.
Sidewalk and Roadway Repairs
Steven has worked relentlessly to ensure that sidewalks are repaired in a timely manner and has successfully pushed DDOT to complete long-overdue sidewalk repairs along the 1200 and 1300 blocks of 10th St. NW. When DC Water damaged portions of the sidewalk on N St. NW, Steven worked with DDOT to hold them accountable, ensuring the sidewalks were replaced.
Traffic Calming Measures
When residents expressed concerns about speeding on 10th St. NW, Steven advocated for a speed bump to slow down traffic. He understands that residents want safe streets for their children to play and pedestrians to explore our neighborhood. Tragically, just before Steven was elected in 2022, a pedestrian was killed by a speeding motorist at the intersection of 10th St. and Massachusetts Ave. NW. This incident underscored the urgent need for traffic calming measures in the area. Since then, Steven has persistently pushed DDOT to implement these measures and expedite their Traffic Safety Investigation (TSI) system. His advocacy has already led to some improvements, including enhanced signage and the pending installation of a permanent speed camera at the intersection.
Addressing Traffic Pattern Concerns
When the redesign of 9th St. NW raised concerns about shifting traffic patterns and confusing signage, Steven worked with DDOT to investigate improvements. He successfully had bollards moved from the intersection of 9th and M St. NW that were obstructing traffic lanes. Additionally, Steven has worked with DDOT to log TSIs for our alley entrances and exits, aiming to enhance visibility and safety through daylighting measures. This will also deter illegal parking, a major frustration for residents who rely on these alleys.
Managing Rideshare Impact
Rideshare drivers in Blagden Alley have been a nuisance to both businesses and residents, overburdening the historic alleyways and compromising building security and pedestrian safety. Steven collaborated with DDOT, his commission, and neighbors to geofence Blagden Alley from rideshare drivers. This initiative includes relocating the loading zone on 9th St. closer to N St. NW, easing the burden of trucks parking in traffic lanes while providing a safer space for delivery drivers. These changes will make Blagden Alley a safer and more enjoyable space for pedestrians and neighbors alike.
Through his dedicated efforts, Commissioner McCarty has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to improving street and traffic safety, ensuring that our community remains a safe and vibrant place for all residents.
